How to resize and move windows with the keyboard on Mac
Starting with macOS 15 Sequoia, macOS has keyboard shortcuts that snap the front window to half the screen or fill it. For quarters you can add your own shortcuts, and for any other size you need an app.
Built-in shortcuts in macOS 15 and later
| Window position | Shortcut |
|---|---|
| Fill the screen | Fn Control F |
| Center | Fn Control C |
| Left half | Fn Control ← |
| Right half | Fn Control → |
| Top half | Fn Control ↑ |
| Bottom half | Fn Control ↓ |
| Return to previous size | Fn Control R |
Adding Shift to an arrow shortcut arranges the front window and the one behind it as a pair, side by side or stacked. The same options are in the Window > Move & Resize menu, and in the menu that appears when you hold the pointer over a window's green button. Apple lists them all in Tile windows on Mac.
Add shortcuts for quarters
Quarters (Top Left, Top Right, Bottom Left and Bottom Right) are in the Move & Resize menu but have no shortcut. To add one:
- Open System Settings > Keyboard and click Keyboard Shortcuts.
- Choose App Shortcuts and click the + button.
- Set Application to All Applications.
- For Menu title, type the menu item's name exactly, such as
Top Left. - Press the keys you want and click Done.
Other sizes, and older versions of macOS
The built-in tiling stops at halves and quarters, and it isn't available before macOS 15. Bayview runs on macOS 13 and later and divides the screen into a grid, up to 12 by 12, that you can use without the mouse:
- Save any block of grid cells as a position with its own shortcut, such as the left two thirds of the screen or a narrow column on the right. Global shortcuts work in any app. Local shortcuts work while the grid is open and can be a single key, so you can open the grid and press H to place a window.
- Set keybinds in the Controls tab that make the front window one grid cell wider, narrower, taller or shorter, or move it one cell in any direction.
Press a position's shortcut twice and the window moves to your next display. See Getting started for setup.
