Getting started with Bayview

How to install Bayview and place your first window, and where to find the settings you'll use after that.

Install

  1. Download Bayview. You'll get a .dmg file.
  2. Open it and drag Bayview into the Applications folder.
  3. Open Bayview from Applications. It runs in the menu bar and doesn't appear in the Dock, so look for its icon at the top of the screen.

To start Bayview whenever you log in, turn on Launch at login in the General tab of Preferences.

Allow Accessibility access

macOS only lets an app move and resize other apps' windows if you allow it. When Bayview asks, click Grant Permission. That opens System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility, where you turn on Bayview.

Place a window

Click the Bayview icon in the menu bar to open the grid. The top of the grid shows which app's window you're about to move. Drag across the cells you want the window to fill and let go. The window moves there and the grid closes.

To open the grid from the keyboard, set an Activate Bayview shortcut. The welcome screen asks for one the first time you open Bayview, and you can change it later in the General tab. Right-click the menu bar icon to get to Preferences.

If you'd like the grid to stay open after you place a window, turn on "Keep grid open until dismissed" in the Grid tab.

Save positions as shortcuts

If you use the same layout a lot, save it as a position. In the Positions tab, add a position, give it a name, record a key combination and drag out the area on the grid. After that, pressing those keys sends the front window to that spot.

Each position is global or local, which you choose from the menu next to its keys. A global shortcut works in any app and needs ⌘, ⌥ or ⌃. A local shortcut only works while the grid is open, so it can be a single key.

Resize and move with keybinds

The Controls tab has keybinds for Increase Width, Increase Height, Decrease Width and Decrease Height, which change the front window's size by one grid cell. Move Up, Move Down, Move Left and Move Right shift it by one cell. None of them have keys until you set them.

Use more than one display

Press a position's shortcut twice in a row and the window moves to the next display, at the same spot on the grid. To turn this off, uncheck "Double press shortcut to move window" in the General tab.

Change the grid size

The grid starts at 6 rows by 6 columns. You can change both in the Grid tab, up to 12 by 12. A finer grid gives you more places to put a window. A coarser one is quicker to drag across.

Enter your license

The free trial lasts 6 hours from the first time you open Bayview. After you buy a license, the key arrives by email. Enter it in the License tab of Preferences. One license covers up to 3 Macs.

Updates

Bayview can check for and install updates on its own, which you control in the Updates tab. To check right away, right-click the menu bar icon and choose Check for Updates. The changelog lists what changed in each version.
