How to move a window to another display on Mac

macOS has two ways to send a window to a second monitor, and you can set up a keyboard shortcut for one of them. Bayview adds a shortcut that works in every app.

Drag it

Drag the window by its title bar past the edge of the screen and onto the other display. The window crosses at the edge where the two displays meet in System Settings > Displays, so if it won't go across, check that the arrangement there matches where the monitors sit on your desk.

Use the Window menu or the green button

In many apps, the Window menu has a Move to item for each connected display, named after the display, such as "Move to LG UltraFine". The same choice appears when you hold the pointer over the green button in the window's top-left corner. Not every app includes it.

Add a keyboard shortcut for it

You can give that menu item its own keys:

  1. Open System Settings > Keyboard and click Keyboard Shortcuts.
  2. Choose App Shortcuts and click the + button.
  3. Set Application to All Applications.
  4. For Menu title, type the menu item's name exactly as it appears, such as Move to LG UltraFine.
  5. Press the keys you want and click Done.

The menu item's name includes the display's name, so you need one shortcut per display, and it only works in apps whose Window menu has the item.

Use Bayview

With Bayview, the shortcut that places a window also moves it between displays, and the window keeps its size and spot on the grid.

  1. In Bayview's Positions tab, add a position with a shortcut. It can be global or local. For example, a global shortcut for the left half of the screen on ⌃⌥←.
  2. Press the shortcut once and the front window moves to the left half of its current display.
  3. Press it again right away and the window moves to the left half of your next display.

This works in every app, and one shortcut covers any number of displays. It's on by default. The setting is "Double press shortcut to move window" in the General tab. Getting started covers setting up positions in more detail.
